The simplicity and purity of the material constantly question contemporary popular elements. In an era of over-design and information overload, it seems to call out to me, urging a return to essence, exploring the existential value between things. Design's purpose is not just innovation in form but achieving resonance with the soul, touching delicate and genuine emotions.

The exploration of paper has become a reflection on life and the meaning of existence for me. Paper, an item overlooked in daily life, how can it allow design to transcend visuals and reach the depths of the soul? This is a challenge for designers and also a process of seeking my answers.

Karape Lapis

A Masterpiece Among Thin Papers / Karape Lapis

We often choose paper within a safe thickness range due to practical processing considerations, controlling both cost and risk. However, once accustomed to this safety, it’s easy to forget the challenge. "Karape Lapis" is not only half the thickness of Double A paper but also features a metallic, iridescent shimmer on the front, distinct from other pearlescent papers that have single or multiple sheens. This shimmer has a unique, almost gold dust-like texture, which is rare. The reverse side retains the original dark green color of the base paper, creating an unexpected effect if used for designs involving folds. Working with very thin paper requires significant printing experience and technical expertise from manufacturers. For instance, the foil stamping on the front must be smooth, slightly indented, and non-peeling, while the back must avoid overly prominent impressions. This necessitates careful adjustment of pressure, temperature, and machinery.

Finally, due to its unique qualities and production difficulty, "Karape Lapis" is categorized in the high-price range on Takeo's official website. The accompanying photo shows a New Year’s card sent by Takeo to Taiwan years ago, where its distinct texture was beautifully showcased through monochrome printing and foil stamping, making full use of its thinness. Please take a moment to appreciate the delicate quality of this thin paper, so different from the usual thick, fluffy varieties.

Karape Lapis

Karape Lapis
